The History of SKB Cases

The History of SKB Cases

SKB Cases were Established in 1977 by Dave Sanderson and Steve Kottman. They manufactured their first SKB guitar case in a small garage in Anaheim, California.
SKB Cases are now globally recognised as an industry leader in the manufacturing of moulded polymer transport cases. SKB cases are designed to prove expert protection for equipment that is used regularly by thousands of companies around the world, such as music and pro-audio products.

They also range into the military, industrial and medical applications side of protective cases. SKB ensures that they supply maximum travel protection for consumer sports and electronics equipment.

The famous SKB logo, has ensured maximum protection and unsurpassed durability for four decades.

In 1979 SKB Cases managed to convince fender that SKB could provide 2,500 cases for Fender’s special anniversary edition Stratocaster. This is when business really started to kick off. By 1983, SKB were manufacturing 600 cases per week, with the help of 20 employees, the cases were being produced on machinery that was built by Dave and Steve.

By 1987 SKB were involved in military contracts and cases for medical equipment, these are great contracts for growth potential. This allowed SKB to move into 40,000 square feet address in Orange, CA. 10 years down the line, and 500 employees stronger, SKB opened their fourth warehouse. Inside which, they have three rotational moulding ovens.

SKB cases are made from rotational moulding ovens, which involves a heated hollow mould, which is then filled up with a charge of material. Once the material is in the mould, it is slowly rotated on two perpendicular axes which causes the softened material to gradually stick to the walls of the mould. This creates the case, then all that needs to be done is the finishing touches, As well as cleaning it off and adding the SKB branding.

The most recent thing SKB have done, in 2015, is installed two new storage silos, that have a 200,000 pound capacity. They were installed for ensure a more efficient materials storage and delivery system to SKB’s main factory.

The History of Peli Cases

The History of Peli Cases

Pelican Products (or Peli Cases as they are known in the UK) was founded in Torrance, California, in 1975 by David and Arline Parker as a mail-order home business. It was David Parker’s desire to develop unique and practical products for the dive market.

Years later Pelican is now a privately held corporation specialising in lighting, protective cases, and luggage.

Peli Cases are moulded plastic containers, which are sealed with a watertight and airtight gasket. Pelican cases meet the standards for waterproofing, with their IEC IP67 rating. IP67 ratings, guarantee dust and water immersion’s of up to 1 meter. They also meet the standard ‘ATA 300’ rating, which indicates compliance with ‘Air Transport Association’, which guarantees durability when shipping products over sea’s. All Pelican products come with a lifetime guarantee.

In Europe, Pelican cases are sold as Peli Cases, due to the fact another company had previously trademarked the ‘Pelican’ name. Peli Cases, come with an automatic pressure purge, which strictly only allows air to travel through in to the case, meaning if the case was to fall into the water, it would have enough air inside it to keep it afloat keeping the contents from getting damaged.

Pelican’s headquarters is situated in Torrance, California. They have 200,000 square feet of land just at this location. Serving as their home office for over 1,200 employees worldwide. Pelican cases are manufactured all over the world, including North America, Europe and Australasia.

They also manufacture in South Deerfield, Massachusetts – Crottendorf, Germany – Leighton Buzzard, UK – Melbourne, Australia – Plymouth, Minnesota.

Peli IP Rated case

What is an IP Rated case?

What is an IP Rated case and why is it important to know what rating your protective case solution provides?

IP Rating (International Protection rating – *sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection) is a rated that refers to the level of protection that a case offers when confronted with dust or water.

The two numbers in the IP code reflect separately the products ability to stop ingress from solid and liquid foreign bodies.

From time to time you may see “X” in the IP code, this indicates that the IP rated only refers to one of the standards.

The first digit in the IP Rating always refers to “Solid Foreign Bodies” and the second digit to “Liquid Foreign Bodies”.

IP Rated Case Chart:

Dust Ingress:

The first digit indicates the level of protection that a case provides against access to hazardous parts (e.g. electrical conductors, moving parts) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.

Level Object Size Protected Against Effective Against
0 Not protected No protection against contact and ingress of objects.
1 >50mm Any large surface of the body, such as the back of the hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part.
2 >12.5mm Fingers or similar objects.
3 >2.5mm Tools, thick wires, etc.
4 >1mm Most wires, screws, etc.
5 Dust Protected Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete protection against contact.
6 Dust Tight No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact.

Water Ingress:

The second digit indicated the level of protection that the case against harmful ingress of water.

Level Size Protected Against Effective Against
0 Not Protected No protection against the ingress of water.
1 Dripping water Dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmful effect.
2 Dripping water when tilted up to 15° Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted up to 15° from its normal position.
3 Spraying Water Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical shall have no harmful effect.
4 Splashing Water Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect.
5 Water Jets Water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
6 Powerful water jets Water projected in powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
7 Immersion up to 1m Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).
8 Immersion beyond 1m The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. Normally, this will mean that the equipment is hermetically sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects.
